My daughter was on the road in heavy rains last evening when she says she heard something pop and then the blades quite moving. However it seems the wiper motor is still working. (this is all info via phone) Does this sound like a motor problem or something else?

Sounds like the mechanism has popped off or broken somewhere. You can remove the glove box assembly by removing the screws around the perimeter, or you can remove the cover above the passenger feet and peer up in there and see what's going on. It's possible the drive gear in the motor broke but I've never seen that.
