'93 850 GLT: Front drivers side wheel wobbling

If I raise the vehicle's suspension and rock the wheel in and out, I notice slight movement. This only happens on my front driver's side wheel. I was wandering if this can be corrected by balancing the wheels or would I have to replace the control arm or any other parts. If so, would anyone know what part number(s) would it/they be?

Should this be dealt with ASAP?

Thanks a lot for any suggestions.

Hi Dave,

I will assume you are referring to rocking the top and bottom of the wheel in and out. Sideways could also point to the steering joints or rack. Top and bottom movement can be caused by the ball joint at the bottom or the big nut holding the wheel hub on. It's normally done up tight, very tight. My Haynes manual says 120Nm, then a further 50degrees.

I have a 1996 - 850 and at its registration inspection a couple of years ago it had a slight wobble top to bottom on the left wheel, and it was this nut which was loose. A big socket and bar and it was fixed.

I had some symptoms of slight judder when moving off from full right lock to full left lock, as in having backed out of my driveway and driving forwards up my street at home. I asssumed a slight CV joint wear, but it's now gone.

Balancing the wheel will not fix what you have described.

As with any steering or suspension problems, they should be dealt with ASAP unless you know for certain that it can be delayed. And as you don't yet know what it is you should at least find out ASAP.

Your Volvo dealer should be able to give you part numbers once you quote them the vehicle VIN, and of course once you find out what you need.
