98 V70 Using Oil

Nov 25, 2006 6 Replies

My 98 V70 has started to use oil lately after 225,000 km. It is not leaking as there is no oily spot under it. Seems to go through a litre of oil every 1,000 to 1,500 km.

Any easy things to check before I place my fate in the hands of a shop?

Thanks.

If you are using 0W-30 or 5W-30, try switching to 10W-30. My '86 Civic Si started to use oil and foul the plugs (and O2 sensor) at about 90k miles, and just going up to 10W-30 solved the problem completely. The car now has 144k miles on it, and still needs no oil added between changes.

I always use 10W30. Don't want to go heavier than this in the cold Canadian winter.

I am getting the P0172 code so maybe there is a connection?

Thanks.

If I were in Canada, I would use the Esso XD3 0W-30. The 10W-30 is not good for Canadian winter. The XD3 is a thick 30 weight. If your burning oil, it will help reduce it some. Oil burning usually means valve seals are shot. If the 0W-30 does not stop it enough, then try the 0W-40. Both of these oils can be used year round.
