Volvo V70 Oil Leak Problem

My 98 S70 seems to be losing oil out of the filler cap and everywhere else lately.

I understand that it is quite a process to take off the intake manifold etc. to fix this.

Anything easy I should try first?

How many hours should the full job be?

Before you do anything major, replace the PVC valve and make sure it's sucking air.

What engine do you have in your S70?

I recently dealt with this problem in my 98 V70, with the B5254FS engine.

In my case the pressure inside the engine rose to the point that it popped the camshaft seals out of their location and i would find oil puddles on my garage floor.

The problem ended up being the small diameter hose that goes from the end of the intake manifold (opposite end to the throttle body, right side of the engine), to the flame arrestor, on the throttle body plastic intake piece. This hose vents the engine when the throttle body is closed, as when the car is decelerating or going downhill.

This hose, being small, gets clogged, and even worse, it's connection on the flame arrestor, gets plugged for about a 7/16" long section. I cleaned the flame arrestor using the right size drill bit, (yes, it was that clogged). and the hose with a throttle body cleaner spray.

In the V70 this small line shares a plastic tubing jacket with the other hose coming from the flame arrestor to the oil trap under the intake manifold. It is possible to take the small hose by itself and clean it inside, without having to take everything apart. Because the clogging takes place by the flame arrestor, it may be possible to use throttle cleaner spray with the lil red straw, to clear the hose without taking it out.

I did take the oil trap, and all the hoses involved in the PCV circuit, without taking the manifold out, just to find out that the problem was just the clogging of the small hose and the flame arrestor, by the throttle body. It was not easy.

I also needed to replace the oil filler cap seal after i was done with the PCV system.

I hope this info helps you.

Good luck,

SYNTHETIC OIL SOLVES THE ISSUE AS IT DOESN'T COKE UP . Just look at the oil cap and you will see if a person is using mineral oil or synthetic oil as one is coked up and one is clean .
