What car?

There are things that sound like your description on a 740 (torque rods). They run longitudinally in a subframe.

Easy enough to do if you have clear access under the car; I ran the back wheels up some ramps. The top one is a bit awkward to get a spanner on, but not impossible. If the rubber bushes need changing this can be done by hacking out the old ones and squeezing in the new ones with a big vice and some soapy water. If you are just replacing the whole rod, then it could be a half hour job (which means allow two hours).

When replacing the rods you may have to put a jack under the nose of the differential to get the bolt holes to align.
