Renault interested in Volvo

Its seems that Renault Chairman Louis Schweitzer expressed a "continuing" interest in acquiring Volvo in the "hypothetical" event that Ford were to be willing to sell. This interest was expressed at a recent meeting of European automotive press types, according to the New York Times.

Apparently Renault has expressed such an interest in the past, specifically some ten years ago, also hypothetically and before Ford came into the picture.

When some readers/posters of this NG had fits over the Ford acquisition, some of us pointed out how beneficial Ford's purchase of Jaguar and Aston-Martin had been for those marques. While Ford says they're not interested in selling the Volvo piece of their Premier Autos Group, they have had some financial ups and downs over the past couple of years. A Renault takeover is a sobering thought, but they seem to have done well with Nissan, so we'll just have to see what happens . . .

There would be nothing suspicious in Renault wanting a piece of the Volvo action, they have already worked with Volvo and the PRV V6 engines.

Was this not the infamous V6 with the aluminium block? Volvo has obviously learned their lesson, and appears to be sticking to in-line engines (AFAIK). V6 is an inferior configuration dynamically, especially in its ubiquitous 90° form. Second, the cost of parts (more of them) and labour (access) is usually worse with V engines. Third (speaking as a metallurgist), engine blocks should only be made from cast iron, for several reasons. There are better places to reduce weight, such as body panels and eliminating DRLs and on-board DVD players. my 2c, H2Only
