I have a ticking noise in a V70 T5 that happens when braking down from fairly high speeds and is more pronounced on a progressive slow down on a downhill slope. The noise appears to come from somewhere in the back and can be heard at around head height from the driver's seat.
The noise obviously does not come from anywhere at the height it appears to come from but is reflected from somewhwere else which may be your case as well.
Although the driver's handbook makes no mention of my car even being equipped with any form of EBFD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution), it is that which is causing the ticking. My car is fitted with STC (Stability Traction Control) and nobody seems to know if EBFD is fitted only with STC or with others as well but the ticking noise is the back wheels sending pulses to a controller to make sure that the rears do not lock up when most braking force is on the fronts.
I hope this makes some sense to you and avoids the need for three visits to a dealer that another poster paid for with no result.. When asked, dealers return a blank expression when asked about EBDF but it is definitely fitted on some models and the pulsing ticking which is annoying is just the various components doing theiir job.

My '99 V70 has the same intermittent "feature". Long, gentle braking induces a tick tick tick that seems to come from the left rear wheel. Downhill and around corners only. Brake a little harder and it goes away.
The Volvo service guys insist that it all checks out OK. They did comment that the brake force distribution mechanism does do a self-test periodically and I may be hearing that. It sounds feasible, I suppose, but I don't know why it only seems to come from the left rear wheel. Or maybe it *is* a function of the system putting most of the effort into the front brakes?
Seems a common feature.
