01 Passat heater blower squeeking

Mar 31, 2006 2 Replies

The heater blower in my 5yr old, 65k miles 2001 Passat has started squeaking. It was faint over the last weeks but today was more noticeable.

Does anyone know what kind of bearings this part has? ball bearings or bronze sleeve bearings? Has anyone repaired this problem by replacing the bearings or by lubricating the bearings?

The part is freaking $300 online, so I will not be buying a new blower or blower motor. This cost is very far out of line with what the part is - I would be curious to know how the price is set.

Thanks in advance!

OK, this is not the heater blower - I did some more complete troubleshooting and found the electric cooling fan to be the problem.

When the Climatronic is on - the AC can turn on and when the AC turns on, the 2nd radiator fan ( cooling fan ) turns on. This fan is driven by a motor and the other is driven by a clutch directly from the serpentine drive.

The initial symptom would only be heard when the heater fan was on but this is coincidental to Climatronic and thus the AC being on.

Also, I can hear the noise for a few moments after the engine stops (The fan is winding down).

Conclusion. bad electric cooling fan after 65k miles and 4 years. btw, I noticed VW changed to a different fan in the 2001.5 year. I wonder if this was a typical failure?

good news for me - this is a cheaper fix!
