1.8 T Chipping

I was thinking of buying one of those performance chips for my MK4 jetta

1,8t for a little more extra ponies. Has anyone done this and have a horror story? Would anybody be for/against it? It would be nice to know if chipping would create things breaking or it would be an advantage.

Thanks for your help!

You could void your warranty! Or better yet you take your VW to the dealer for some repairs and there's an open flash for your ECU. Guess what happens when we flash your ECU which was chipped... you just lost all them extra ponies! If you chip it, just tell the dealer when it goes for service.

Can't you just disconnect the battery and let the prom do it's dirty deed again? I have a prom in my 94 OBD-I which doesn't get flashed IIRC.

When we flash a ECU it's really doing the same thing the chipper do. They just change programming in the PROM for more boost, fuel, timing, etc. The flash would just replace that info with all of VW's current software level.

So, is it possible for me to just somehow get this program for free rather than paying Nearly $600 for a chip?

How are you going to get it for free???? Here's what you need to do it if you had the VW software:

5051 $15,000 or 5052 $8000

How's that for starters! Outside VW, performance companies have spent a huge amount of R&D-$cash$ to come up with what works along with making a profit to keep their company in the black. I'm not into chippin ecu's other than what VW has approved for their engines. One other concern is that I bet all them chippers state that it's only for off-road use because otherwise the engine will need to be certified by the government for meeting federal emission standards. So what you are saying is you want anther 20 or so ponies for FREE? Isn't going to happen in this world.

OK, I must of been thinking something else. I misuderstood...I was told of a cable that plugs in to your OBDII in the car and connects through a cable via your COM port on a pc, but that only monitors engine diag. and what not.

I'd rather spend 6 bills on a chip rather than 15 G's on a machine!!! Just out of Curiosity, are you a VW mechaninc?

Yes I do work for a VW dealer., and we do all the flashes via the OBDII connector. There currently are flashes for: Golf/Jetta/Passat/Touareg for ECU, TCM, Instrument cluster, all wheel drive electronics, trailer hitch controls. All depending which VW you own.

re flashing destroying chipped programming: Not true. If you google for chipping, you'll find that all of the manufacturers replace the ecu with a custom unit of their own that is flash locked - it can't be reprogrammed with the dealer's equipment. You also can lock the ecu to factory-standard mode, which shows up on the diagnostics as an exact match in the original ecu.

At least > You could void your warranty! Or better yet you take your VW to the dealer
