85 Jetta dies on hot days

My 85 Jetta acts like it has vapor lock. On any day when it's over about 70 degrees, it will quit and refuse to start until it cools down. Just before it goes, the fuel pump starts groaning and then sounds real flaky.

It got real bad a few weeks ago and started pinging. Now the car pings under the lightest acceleration, even on level ground.

Is this another manifestation of the transfer pump problem or something else.

It's a stock 1.8 L with auto and air.
