VW Jetta engine woes

The following post pertains to a 1984 VW Jetta GL(1.7L CIS)(EN engine code)

Well, I got the 12pt bit and managed to get the cyl. head off. There was coolant and oil over the head gasket and in the bolt holes. There were around 4 or 5 coolant passages plugged solid(most-likely reason engine would overheat?). When running bellow apprx. 1300rpm, there would be a pop.pop.pop.pop noise near the intake/exhaust manifold. I could not hear it though at the end of the exhaust pipe at the rear of the car. Any higher then 1300rpm, the noise would stop completely. I do not have a long enough straight-edge to be precise, but using things around the house, there is a detectable warpage(apprx. .4mm). Should I not even spend the money on the tools to measure the warpage. Should I spend the money to have it milled or just get a rebuilt head? Could the pop.pop.pop.pop noise be from a valve? Should I just get mine rebuilt? Could I use my impact wrench to turn the camshaft to see if the noise is from the valvetrain? Could the noise have been from just uneven compression on cyls.(168,135,140,170).

Thanks in advance

JMHO I would take the cylinder head to a GOOD machine shop, with camshaft installed, and have them "rebuild" it. I usually ask for new exhaust manifold studs and those self-locking nuts for them too. Using a GOOD headgasket and NEW cylinder head bolts, install it properly. That means cleaning both surfaces and using brake clean to degrease both surfaces. Also pay attention to the installation instructions that come with the gasket!

Did you clean up the top of the pistons and block? What did the pistons look like? Black and oily? Clean and new? Or ???

Also, I saw in another post to have your head baked at a machine shop. Would this be better than having it planed? Do you have to remove all valves and valvetrain to have it done? How much would this cost?
