98 Passat front end noise noise

This whole thing started at about 40,000 miles. I brought her in for the 40k check up and complained about a "thunking" noise when driving slow over bumps and imperfections in the pavement especially when steering wheel was at certain angles. The dealer replaced tie-rod ends per a recall notice that was out for my particular year and model and vin#. Now the car has 65,000 miles and the noise this louder and very much more noticeable. I took it to a highly recommened alignment/brake specialist. He came up with that the strut bushings were a little lose and not to worry unless it got louder and or the car didn't drive well. Does anybody else have the same noisey front end? What did your fix entail? Did you do it at the dealer or at an outside source?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I would try to lube all the suspension components (and perhaps sell it). Expect a 1000-1500$ to repair.

Grease normally makes it better. My BMW also had worn bushings and it didn't get worse for a year, so not to worry yet. I don't know what's included in the $1500, but I would say the poster would like you to replace your whole front end. I don't now all the work that is involved for a '98, but besides getting the wheel of, getting a bunch of bolts out, some swearing at the bushings, it isn't a really big job. Didn't check lately, but if the bushing are less than $300 each, I would check another shop before paying over $300 for the job. And if he charges $300 for a bushing I would go somewhere else too.

Many bushing are pressed in control arms. You have to replace control arms.

800$+ in parts alone is easy.

You can have a machine shop press the old ones out and the new ones in. Just get the arms out with the bad bushings, get the new bushings and find a shop that has seen Volkswagens before. A good shop won't have a problem with that.

VW/Audi does not sell these bushings separately.
