Common, NO! But you need to get it checked to keep the repair cost low before all the gear oil leaks out.
Okay, thanks. All I have so far is odor, no spots on the driveway. I've been going on the assumption that if it's not dripping off the car, then it hasn't lost enough oil to cause trouble.

Only partially true. If it's leaking due to pressure then and you're driving on highway then it might get blown/burned off well before being able to drip. Take a look for signs of it being blown back along the underside of the car. If it's oily and smells like gear oil then track down the leak.
Good point. I'll get under it this weekend to see if I can pinpoint the source.
