Gear Oil Leak

2001 Jetta 2.0, 5-speed -- I'm getting the unmistakable odor of gear oil from under the hood after long drives, the tranny is leaking somewhere. Question for those of you with experience -- is there a common spot for these trannies to leak? Any advice where to look first?

Thanks!

Common, NO! But you need to get it checked to keep the repair cost low before all the gear oil leaks out.

Okay, thanks. All I have so far is odor, no spots on the driveway. I've been going on the assumption that if it's not dripping off the car, then it hasn't lost enough oil to cause trouble.

Under warranty, then drive until it dies!

Only partially true. If it's leaking due to pressure then and you're driving on highway then it might get blown/burned off well before being able to drip. Take a look for signs of it being blown back along the underside of the car. If it's oily and smells like gear oil then track down the leak.

Good point. I'll get under it this weekend to see if I can pinpoint the source.
