K-Jetronic problems in frosty weather

My 89 Scirocco GTI is having problems with frosty mornings - it starts instantly but will only run for about 5 seconds - If I touch the accelerator it dies instantly. Then its a case of start again, wait till it stops, start again etc etc until it gets enough heat in it to keep going - the engine is still liable to die when returning to idle for the next five minutes. Which particular valve or regulator is not working? They all seem to be much too expensive to swap out on a "trial and error" basis.

Have you done the simple stuff like new plugs, new vacume lines and cleaned the throttle plate area of the intake manifold? Don't forget the rubber gromet in the valve cover where the crank case breather thing goes.

Possibly a faulty warmup regulator bolted to the block, or coolant temperature sensor for FI. Not too sure of your FI system though. good luck!

Possibly the cold start injector (the 5th injector located on the front of the intake manifold). Also, get the Haynes manual.
