No 4th Gear, 87 Vanagon

Oct 03, 2006 3 Replies

My Vanagon 2wd lost 4th gear while cruising along the freeway. Just did it; not while shifting or anything. I heard a "thunk", not very loud, and 4th was gone. All other gears are fine. In fact, I completed my trip home, about 160 miles, in third, keeping my speed down. Any thoughts. BTW, I'm the original owner!!!

At least you had an audible, I heard nothing. 88 Fox, 4th gear failed, no warning, no sound, just no workee no more. Replaced with used same make/model vehicle transaxle. Still going down the road, all gears intact again.

That's what I'm planning. The car only has about 330k miles, and looks good. Got a price on a used transaxle of about $700 delivered, and a shop to R&R for $275. That's one job I'll pay to have done, without a lift.

In my case paid 345 bucks for the transaxle. Luckily, my old cv joints were still good. Labor was 250.
