TYhe fuel mileage on my wife's 02 is down from 28 to 21 mpg. She thinks it is because she is doing more city driving, but I do not remember that in the past. It statrted going down after I replaced the air filter, you know how much of a headache that is.
Any suggestions ?

In my '02 Passat wagon with the 1.8T engine and auto transmission, I'll usually get 24-25MPG on my drive to work (in the summer, anyway), but all it takes is some bad luck with the traffic lights at the start or end of the trip to push it down to 21.
No answer, but I empathize. The mileage on my 2002 W8 has dropped by ca 5 miles per gallon. Ouch. I first complained about it early last fall and got no relief. Now my car is sitting at the VW dealers to have all of it woes addressed before it is out of warranty. I at least want to be sure it problems will be well documented as pre-existing.
If you find anything out, I would be interested in hearing the answer. Possibilities bandied about here have been transmission problems (it doesn't shift when it should) or a problem with the main computer.
I attempted to change the filter myself and gave up, but pulled a few handfuls of leaves and debris out of the pre-filter area; you easily get to it by pulling the plastic ductwork off and you'll notice what appears to be a dead-end cavity filled with leaf junk; at the bottom is a fine mesh which leads to the main filter. It's not even recognizable as a filter. After doing this, I am convinced the mileage went up.
