Passat Oil warning?

Just got a supplement to my owners manual for my 04 Passat warning me to useonly certain synthetic oils or risk violating the warranty. Seems there havebeen some sludge problems. What makes the 1.8T so unique as to requirespecial oil - or is VW simply going of the deep end again? David

Hey what about posting which specific oils ARE recommended. ;-) Or is it just Mobil 1 0W-40?

AND listing what the engine oil requirements are too? Or just put the letter on a website for us all to see! :-)

does it sound like this

"According to the Dallas-based association, Volkswagen issued a technical service bulletin last fall stating that only VW Part No. G 052 167 A2 (motor oil) should be used in 2004 model vehicles with 1.9-liter TDI engines. The bulletin advises that warranty coverage on those vehicles becomes void if owners fail to use the specified oil." info from here

Well, at least for the US market, there is no such thing as 5W-40, at least according to the ExxonMobil web site - they list 0W-20, 0W-30,

0W-40, 5W-30, 10W-30, and 15W-50.

lol, that is why I indicated I bought some Mobil 1 5W-40 at my chicago neighborhood Murray's auto parts store. I think I have seen this oil in 2 different packagings, one saying 'Truck and SUV' (at Murrays) and the other saying meeting European Standards (at Wal-Mart).

I also read that Castrol is making the necessary oil for the USA dealers.

That was before someone started screaming and yelling. :-)

That sounds like what I saw at a local branch of a chain. I was at several store -- Auto Zone, Wally Mart, O'Reilly's -- and I can't remember at which one I saw the 5-40.

I never even heard about this oil sludge proble till it happend to me. I have an 01 passat 1.8t with 60k. Im the second owner got it at

45K. I have all the recipts while I've had the car. Now I have to hunt down the original owner and try to get all of his oil recipts. The dealer who took apat my engine did'nt mention anything about this till I just learned of it. He than said that to get vw to cover me is going to be impossible thats why he did'nt mention it. Also he said he had 5 other passat's with this same problem. If you change your own oil good luck. Who's covering the double price for synthetic oil??? Has anyone seen the prices of VW motor parts??? For that kind of price they should be durable and realiable not fragile and sensative. I guess Im outraged cause "I drove it and I got it". From VWsport.com NNTP Gateway

Toyota has that problem on their V6 as I recall. They will only cover it if the dealer has done all the work including oil changes! Even if your the original owner and it's still under warranty. I don't know what the conditions are that cause it but as I recall toyo says it's the oil.

Not sure how this is going to all wash out, but for service records have your dealer check the warranty records through VW which should only take a few minutes since all VW dealers are connected to VW's main system. As for the DIYer I suggest you keep a log book of when the oil changes were done along with receipts for purchase of oil and filters? Not sure if this will help but only time will tell. In my opinion this sludge issue has more to do with owners not changing their oil every 5000 miles or using "cheap" oil.

News to me. But if I was badapple, I would have changed the oil at 45K every

2000 miles a few times if I didn't have receipts from the PO. I'm sure that would have helped save it. I suspect not much was refurbished after the used car transaction. Every time I buy a used car I make sure all fluids are changed.
