'98 Passat 1.8T Timing Belt?

The scheduled maintenence suggests a timing belt change at 80k miles.

VW says 105,000 miles but if it was my car I would do it NOW! Since you're is a 98 there is a kit to update the belt and tension roller because the early cars would break long before there time! "You're on borrowed time"!

Time for it.

I do mine every 60k.

I agree with Woodchuck. I was mistaken before. 105k is the correct VW recommended time. Also... don't wait to 105k!

Ok, so we need to change the belt on our 2000 NB Turbo How big of a PITA is it?

I've changed a few belts in my time, but none have had an engine compartment so packed full of hardware as this appears to be. Rex in Fort Worth

Yep, the NB is a PITA due to lack of room. VW warranty time is 2.2 hours and most dealer add 50% to that.

Thanks everyone for your warnings, dire warning and cautions about getting my timing belt changed well before the 105K VW indicated interval.

If one is changing a timing belt, I suppose one might chang other things as well. I;ve heard of changing out the water pump at this time. I've heard that there is an improved turbo inlet pipe (I'll research who supplies it) out there. With the hardware out of the way that must be removed to get access to the timing belt, would this b ea good time to chang out the T inlet pipe?
