I have a 97 Polo 1.6 Manual, what is the accepted wisdom for changing the timing belt. Best info I have at the moment is "check it" at 60,000miles.
Thanks
Dave

That's about right. Another thing you should do (if you haven't already) is find out if it is possible for the valves to collide with the pistons if the belt breaks or it otherwise gets way out of time. For some engines it cannot happen, and therefore a broken timing belt is no big deal - just replace the belt.
If you can't find the right number, I would go with that one. The right number should be in your owner's manual. Note: there are times when this number is changed mid year, so if there is some debate, use the smaller number.
Beg pardon, but a broken timing belt is always a big deal. Here's an often-overlooked fact about timing belt breaks -- the engine won't run any more after it breaks. Honest! In a car, that's a big deal! Especially when the sumbitch breaks at midnight, somewhere between Boondocks and Hellenback -- which it will.
Well, if you put it that way, I guess you are correct. I was talking a broken timing belt that results in a destroyed engine. For me, such an event, which could easily cost $2000 or more, is a much bigger deal than the inconvenience of calling for a tow with your cell phone. You do have a cell phone, don't you? If not, and if you travel very much, you should get one.
Regards.
Well, Pop, according to that line of reasoning, if you have a cell phone with you, even a destructive belt break isn't a big deal, is it?
Anything that causes a car to be inoperable and need towing to a shop to sit for a couple of days while it's repaired is a big deal. Knowing that VW timing belts have a propensity for breaking any time after
60,000 miles, well, cell phone or not, replace the belt.Of course you are absolutely correct, no question about it. ;>)
Good day.
I'm just sayin', is all. Have a good one yourself!
Before it breaks! ;+)
Grin.....I was hoping for that too!
