Powered antenna in 2001 WE Jetta?

Hey all, I have installed an aftermarket radio in my wolfsburg 2001 jetta. Now, I have read that some have powered ant. some don't. My am reception is null and void, and fm reception is ok, but could be better. This is my question, does the power amp for the antenna actually get fed

12v through the antenna's center conductor wire? I have no other wires coming off the ant. wire, and there is no other wires from the factory loom that is open (aside from the set that goes to the trunk for the cd changer). If it does take 12v from the ant. wire itself, do I need to isolate it somehow with a diode or something?

TIA.

You'll need a powered antenna adapter like this one from Crutchfield:

12V thru the center wire and has the proper isolation circuit already built in.

I know about this adapter, but it's null and void in my case. I chopped off the stock vw connetor and soldered on an iso (motorola) connector. Now, I can't find the stock one I put away...

Would a diode suffice, or is it gonna get complicated??

Actually no I won't... I put on a 4.3v zener diode (which I had handy from other stuff) and hooked up the power ant wire to it with the diode soldered inline with the ant coax. Works like a champ, and I measured only 0.03v coming back to the ant connection...

I tried it fears of blowing the input on my deck, but it worked for the better...
