BERLIN (AP) - Volkswagen AG is recalling 870,000 vehicles worldwide to check front axles for a potential problem, the company said Wednesday.

The German automaker's recall affects VW Passat models built between

1996 and 1999 as well as Audi A4 and A8 models built between 1994 and 1999 and Audi A6 models built between 1997 and 1999.

The recall is to examine rubber "boots" on the front axles, which can get damaged and in some cases cause failure of the bearing arm, Volkswagen said.

The company, based in Wolfsburg, Germany, expects that about one per cent of the vehicles affected by the recall will need repairs, spokesman Hans-Gerd Bode said.
