vw to shop for emission & certification

In Ontario, Canada, there are permits you can get for cars (10 day permits) that allow you to drive the car to an appropriate garage for certification, and emissions tests..

My questions are:

  1. if you buy a car, change the ownership as an unplatted vehicle without a certification, then your ownership would say un-fit, correct?

  1. How would you get this same vehicle to a garage for certification if it is unfit, unplatted, uncertified, etc?

How does this typically work?

Here is the best thing. Buy the vehicle and drive it to the safety (or between repair and safety) on the previous owners fit status. You have 6 days to transfer the vehicle fit or unfit into your name- that's up to you.

Would that be with the previous owner's plates, insurance, etc? What if their plates (sticker) wasn't renewed, and they took the insurance off the car?

I believe that some insurance is transferrable to any vehicle... including rentals... wonder if that would cover this situation?

Perhaps the previous owner could get a 10 day permit?

What about those garages that have dealer plates? Could they not temporarily use the dealer plates to get the vehicle with?

It has to be your insurance. You must provide proof of your insurance on the vehicle in order to obtain a trip permit, usually just a policy number and insurance company name will do. As for license plates, we aren't dealing with license plates in this conversation so it is irrelivant to ask about them. Garages with dealer plates usually won't lend them out to just anyone unless you know them personally. Go to the licensing office in your area with the owner, you must provide proof of insurance, a bill of sale, an ownership in fit status (the current owner usually) and a Used Vehicle package must be purchased ($20). They will provide you with a 10 permit ($15) but you have to transfer the car either fit or unfit in your name within 6 days of purchase ($10 + tax on the higher amount-bill of sale or UVIP).

I thought you had to have a car in your name before you could get insurance on it???? I see what you're saying otherwise... thanks

Nope, just tell the insurance company that you are buying the vehicle and you want to insure it for a trip permit. The girl at my company told me they couldn't do it and I told her to go and talk to someone that knows what they are doing. Once she came back to the phone she said "your right, you can put insurance on it".
