Any ideas how the a/c clutch barrings can be removed?????

I am trying to remove the barrings on a 93 astro. When the car is running, it makes noise, and I saw it is comming from the front of the ac compressor, which is the pully with some barring inside, and it is grinding/metal shavings all over. I know it must be a barring, but I already removed the front center nut, but for some reason it is not comming out. I tryed pulling it and wedging it with a screwdriver, but nothing works. I can move the pulley behind it, and it wigles like crazy, but I cannot get to it because of this front cover, any ideas how this is supposed to come out????? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

You need the proper puller.

This is a magnetic clutch, much like the kind I see every day on fanbelt driven hydraulic pumps, if you have removed the center retaining nut from the front of the clutch assy, take a good look at the hole in the clutch that the bolt came out of, it may be threaded in such a way that you can take a larger bolt, thread it into the clutch itself, and turn it in until it bottoms against the shaft of the compressor itself.......from here, continue to tighten the bolt and it will "press" the clutch off of the tapered shaft....do not lose the little key that keeps things lined up. Once the clutch assy is off, just replace it, trying to replace the bearing alone is more trouble than it's worth. Good Luck, Ed

There isn't enough depth to the threads in the driven hub to facilitate removal of the driven hub. That is why the correct puller is needed. FWIW, the Robinaire puller for this job is probably < $20.

Your friendly neighborhood AutoZoo store will loan them to you if you buy the clutch from them.

This guy already received the proper answer from Doc:

In the Alt:Chevy:4X4 group, he's just looking for a cheaper way out!

What are you talking about? A guy named Ken answered Doc, not the original poster JP. Have another drink buddy!

If you were prying on it with a screwdriver, you could very well have messed up the actual clutch plate (clearance, straightness). Just beware.
