Triumph TR7 with Dolomite Sprint Engine - Questions

I have a Triumph TR7 with a Dolomite Sprint engine fitted.

Two questions:

Firstly, how do I safely remove the water pump impeller and bearings/seals so I can replace them? Secondly, has anyone got a new/old stock distributor rotor arm lying around for a Sprint engine they want to sell?

Usual trick for this is to remove the pump spindle (easy) and exchange the whole unit for the uprated ones that used to be available from Rimmer Bros.

It's a long time since I had my Sodomite Sprint (worst car I've ever owned) and even back then it was nigh on impossible to get seals as separate components. Then you had the impeller, which desperately needed the extra vanes of the uprated one. If you do decide to pull the impeller off the shaft, then you need to _MAKE_ a magic puller for it that fits exactly. Go at it with a claw or 3 leg puller and you _will_ break chunks out of the impeller rim. Get a disk of MDF and turn a circular shallow dish into it, then size of the impeller rim. Back this up with a bit of steel for strength and attach the business end of a 2 or 3 leg puller to the top. The actual pull is easy, but you need to give that fragile impeller the best and closest support you can arrange.

PS - Get the radiator re-cored with the biggest fattest core you can fit in there. Every little helps!

Thanks for the info. So, I have removed the single securing bolt from the impeller, but the unit won't easily withdraw from the engine. Are you saying it is this part of the process that is easy? Am I not trying hard enough perhaps?

Have a look on some of the Stag forums, it's the same pump! Note, you can't just swap a 6 vane for a 12 vane impeller, the pump cover must also be replaced to suit, the clearances are totally different. Try turning the engine by hand (can't remember which way, sorry) whilst gently pulling the impeller upwards, the helix of the gear sometimes aids removal this way. Pump rebuild kits are readily available, be careful of the drive gear on replacement complete units, they have been known to wear rapidly, wrecking the jackshaft gear in the process. Badger.
