1997 ford taurus

why would water overflow if the motor is not showing hot on the temp guage. car has 84000 miles just changed the oil have always kept it maintained on
regular basis since i purchased it

Another would be a blown head gasket .. but since we had two incidents of bad water pump as shown posted on here last week, suggest you follow that lead first.
Reasoning is that there is not sufficient waterflow to cool 'hot-spots' in the engine and there is local 'boiling' though the overall temp might appear proper.
Another possible symptom of eroded WP is low heater output... but that cant be relied on to define the cause.
