Can you hear the solenoid pick up, or do you get the clicking sound that means there is not enough power in the battery to do this?

There may be a master plug for the wiring that has come undone due to vibration, etc. It may be not far from the battery. Look for it. If this is undone or loose, nothing happens - no lights; no horn; nothing.

Why would you think the starter has given up? Do you have other things like horn; lights?

I agree. However, it still could be the starter and , if so, will happen again. The brushes could be worn or there could be a dead spot on the armature. Sometimes when you come back to them in these cases they start normally again for one time or a few. Be prepared to beat on the starter if it happens and get a final start out of it so you can head to the parts store or home.

Basically same thing happened to my 1999 F150. Crawled underneath and everything looked fine. Started moving wires around on the starter and the main terminal lug was cracked through enough that sometimes it would contact enough to start and other times it wouldn't. The crack was not obvious until I moved the cable and then it broke right off. Crimped a new lug on the wire and everything has been fine again the past almost 2 years now. Maybe you will be as lucky.

or it could be a dodgy ground connection. Wiggle a few wires and se if you find something a little too flexible.

Are you sure the battery is good? What tests have you performed on it?

Everybody wants to jump to the heavy stuff.

1 ) how bout something as simple as loose or dirty battery connection. 2 ) no way it can be the battery means what, you just replaced it?
