randomly accelerating buick question

ive got a 96 buick century. saturday i started the car and while idling it the engine sounded like the gas pedal was being pressed. i drove around and when stopping, it felt like the car was pulling a little. after i while i went to stop and it felt and sounded like the gas pedal was to the floor and i could barely stop the car. i pulled over, shut off the car (which it did with a big *KA-CHUNG*). sat for a minute, started again and it was fine.

later that evening i started the car again, heard it revving up. shut it off, started again, and it was fine again.

my friend thinks i just need to lube up the accelerator cable which is probably sticking. does this sound right? or might it be a transmission issue?

Does it have a solenoid bypass in the throttle body for idle? Check for that sticking.
