Gaining cars.

At work we've got a huge car park because the site used to have an abatoir with over 1200 employees. Now there are only a few smaller and much more profitable companies left.

There are three abandoned cars in there. The longest there is a C reg VW Scirroco that looks in decent nick and has some very expensive alloys on it. It hasn't moved for 5 years. Can I just apply for ownership (on behalf of the company) to the DVLA and get it towed off by a breaker for a few quid?

You can contact your local council who will put a notice on the screen to notify that it will be lifted within a certain time frame and they will then take it away.

If it's on private land?

What wheels are they? If they're BBS RAs, you're looking at an easy £100 even without decent tyres.

I don't think he wants it taken away exactly.

I reckon there are two options here.

A) Sell the cars to a breakers on the basis that nobody's going to find out or

B) Get the owners details from the DVLA with the reason that it's left on company land, and then write to the keeper asking if they want it. If they don't, have it broken.

C) Fill in the form from DVLA claiming you've just acquired the car without a log book and paying the 19 quid charge.

And possibly having the owner come back and ask where the hell his vehicle is and why youve scrapped it?

The message from "Doki" contains these words:

Write to the owner explaining that the parking charge has now reached £1000 and are they considering settling up any time soon or would they like the car disposed of?

That's a bit pitiful, I'd say at least 5k or so. It's 5 years, afterall.

There used to be a legitimate process allowing you to take over 'abandoned' cars after they had had some time period (couple of months?) to try and contact the owners, but I'm not sure if that was abolished a year or so back. It rings a bell.

Having noticed a poster in B'ham yesterday offering parking for £750/annum I guess you're right.

In fairness, it's only fair. I mean you can't ditch something on someone's property, come back in 5 years time, then shout about it disappearing!

I once knew an old chap who used to do exactly that with abandoned cars, and he would give them to needy families. It was a great idea, as some of the cars were actually very good. He once got an R reg BMW 3 series, sold it, bought 3 Astras for their price from another private generous dealer-person, and gave them to families that needed a car but couldn't afford the initial cost. He's dead now unfortunately. No connection I presume...but you never know.

Nice point eh, what I was trying to imply was that they should be reeped up by councils and sold cheaply, or given free, to people who can't afford a car, but would benefit from having one substantially, after attempt at contact with owners has failed.

They've been left on private land for *years*. One of them has been there 5 years.

Someone further up the thread pointed out that I don't *exactly* want them towed and scrapped. I want to flog the nice bits and *then* scrap them.

I've emailed the DVLA to find out how to go about it.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Coyoteboy" saying something like:

It's abandoned. Up to one year, possibly not, but five years?

Mind you, the owner might be doing time for armed robbery... and gets out soon.

Alternative answers:

a) What car?

b) Five quid per day parking fee for five year comes to - oh, let's just call it nine thousand pounds.
