W-reg (2000) Peugeot 306 1.4 Running on 3 cylinders

The in-laws Peugeot 306 1.4 (W-reg) has been running badly and the other day became undrivable, chugging/stalling. Garage looked at it and unfortunately the father in-law has reinterpreted what they said into gibberish, so the only thing I know is that it's only running on 3 cyclinders, the garage serviced it so I assume that the plugs and leads are all ok (i.e new or at least cleaned), they stated that they'd have to order parts and the quote was 500 quid but again that is reinterpreted from the in-law gibberish (maybe I should just ring the garage but hey).

Without anything else to go on, anyone got any ideas of common faults with these - the car has only done 50K or so but the old dear revs the nuts off it. I've searched around and have seen comments about the ignition coils going and taking the ECU with them but the symptoms of this are said to simply be 'bad idling', could I just have an extreme case here ....

Anyone got any good links to sites with Peugeot common faults would be appreciated.

Cheers

Most likely a failed coil pack- pretty common on these engines, though 206's are more prone to it for some reason. Sometimes accompanied by other electrical weirdness caused by the faulty coil pack spiking the electrical system- look for dials jumping about, and the ecu appearing to shut down / restart randomly whilst the engine is running. - easily seen on a scan tool when plugged into the diagnostic port.

Change the coil pack and the leads- both have been modified at least twice.
