Peter Robinson, in the 30 July 2003 issue of British magazine AutoCar, states that insiders have stated that the power of the new Mercedes McLaren SLR will be 626 hp. He then states that what is not known is whether this is the power in PS or hp. Even if it is in PS, the hp figure would be 617 hp. He states that since it's a German car, it's likely that it is indeed 626 PS = 617 hp. That seems to correct to me because since the German car companies are now using ratings in kW rather than PS or hp, 626 PS yields a nice round figure in kilowatts, 460 kW. Remember that the SLR is powered by the 5.4-liter AMG V8 engine, so 626 PS is a very respectable output for that displacement when the best regular production AMG versions have 500 PS. He also states that the official power output will be announced in mid-August. Also, keep in mind that when the Vision SLR was announced, its power rating was 557 PS from the same
