Nissan 200 SX ( SR20 DET ) S14 Cylinder Head Removal

Hi,

Could someone please give me an insight to removing a cylinder head from a Nissan 200 SX ( Engine: SR20 DET .. S14 )

I'm removing the head due to a knocking noise at start-up. I have been advised that there maybe a blockage somewhere in the oilways, which has caused severe upper engine wear??

The oil pressure light remains off and the pressure appears to be fine ( between 1.5 - 2.0 bar at idle )

This engine is costly to replace. So before doing so, I would like to remove the head in order to be sure that if there is a blockage, the damage has only been restricted to the upper part of the engine, which would only mean a new head.

If someone has a scan, diagram, workshop cd or any advice on this engine, I would really appreciate their help!

Thanks in advance,

Jamber.

It could be the Normal wear of the Timing system. Common on the SR20 and KA24. This would mean just pulling the water pump, crank pulley and upper and lower covers. The Head will come off the same way if you decide to do it. As the upper cover has a couple bolts in hidding. While you are at it, may want to put and Underdrive Pulley back on the Crank and Alternator. Good for another 20HP..

More likely is either a bad chain or worn out rod bearings. Clicking is top end, knocking is bottom end normally. Without hearing it, hard to say.

The wear has come rapidly over the period of a month or so. It also has had a new chain tentioner put on it recently !? I have just obtained the workshop manual for it ( pdf ) so I'll see how it goes !

Thanks for the advice.

Could just be tappet rattle, clatters for about 30 sec first thing in morning, fine on all other starts - try some wynns stop rattle? Run it at idle with 1/2L of oil flush (wynns or STP) or red ATF for 10 min before next oil and filter change, do not drive with ATF or oil flush in the oil. Do oil changes at 3000miles. MX5 has tappet rattle too.

a last resort remove each tappet, soak overnight and purge withparaffin.

If you get the noise on every startup more likely big ends. Then it starts to rattle at medium revs while in cruise and light load but goes quiet on acceleration or overrun. Shortly after this is will just knock all the time, then the piston bounces off the valves lifting the head.

If you still think it's top end, start by just taking the cambox cover off - any top end wear will be easily seen as one or more cams will not have nice smooth shiny surfaces - they will be rough and scored.

Has the 25MB PDF Nissan workshop manual gone from the download files on the silvia web site? Looks to be there - well except for the few pages they cocked up scanned twice or not at all.

77&PN=1 The fast back RS13 is there too (says S13) with CA18DET. Anyone with a late 180SX RPS13 needs both, S13 for body, S14 for engine.

If it rattles for a few seconds and then sounds "OK" as soon as it gets oil pressure, that points to worn rod bearings.
