pontiac rear end locking up

Hi, I have a 1990 pontiac tempest 6 cyl. It has a weird problem whith the rear wheels or something locking up. When first started and reversed out of the drive way and the brakes applied the rear passenger side raises up several inches. If the vehicle is then driven forward and the brakes applied it lurches to one side and the rear wheels appear to lock. If the vehicle is driven for a few blocks it then perfoms normally. Sometimes there seems to be a slight hot or burning smell. The rear brake shoes are in good shape. Emergency brake working correctly and new shocks have been installed. The local shop does not seem to know what is wrong. Does anybody have any ideas for a fix?

if its one brake locking, i would suspect the wheel cylinder or caliper sticking , ive seen a collapsed rubber brake line cause ths also , maybe if you have 2 rubber lines on the rear end,one is collapsed inside. the springs on the shoes pull the shoes back in after braking , so maybe a wheel cyl or rubber brake line is not letting the fluid flow back to the mastercyl.

Thanks for your suggestions we tried everything but still had the same problem. After exhausting all options we were left with changing the shoes even though they looked perfect. It appears that one set were hardened in some way and after applying the brakes and warming the wheels up they operated normally. Anyway new shoes have fixed the problem. Thanks, Ed
