SAAB 900SE Steering vibration

Getting a farly heavy vibration in the car steering at about 40-50mph, especially with power on. Road speed linked rather than engine speed. Have moved both front wheels to back, and no improvment, so pretty sure it's not wheel balance.

Could this be a drive shaft or gearbox bearing problem?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks Steve Darlington, UK

I'm not sure if they have these on your side of the pond, but getting the wheels balanced with a Hunter Roadforce machine is always a good first step:

. Make sure your wheels are trueand round and that your tires don't have issues with belts and such. The Hunter should help with diagnosing tire issues. These cars are really sensitive to something being off in the front end. A popular issue are the tripod bearings, particularly the passenger side. Some people point at the carrier bearings. Tie rod ends (inner and outer), the steering rack, bad struts, or even brake issues can cause problems. THe best bet is a really strong front end survey to start to eliminate what is obvious, then dig into things like the tripod bearings.

Thanks. Had car checked at a non-specialist car mechanic and he was pretty sure it was not wheel balance or bearings but was pointing to play in the gearbox output shaft on the passenger side. He was uncomfortable about doing any further investigation (I'm glad to say, on reflection).

I'll take a closer look and perhaps talk to the SAAB dealer.

Thanks Steve
