starting issues with '97 Jeep

hey you all, I have a '97 Jeep that had a bad battery. It was old and needed to be replaced, as told to me by an inspection guy whom I trust. Plus, the battery was very old, and it made sense. Each time I've gone to start it the past few days, it took longer and longer to start. I realized I better replace the battery quickly and did so. So now, with a new battery, it fires right up when I've been running the Jeep and stop somewhere quickly. But when it sits for longer periods, like overnight, for example, it takes a long time of turning over before it actually starts - just like with the old bad battery. Also, I had heard a "whistle" kind of sound from the motor for a long time, but it went away once I put in the new battery. Any ideas what's going on? thanks in advance....

you can do a load test on the battery to see if it is good. replacing a battery that is 6 or 7 years old that is still working fine is probably a good idea as it is likely on its last legs. I suspect a that your, requires lots of cranking after sitting for some time problem, is a fuel problem, but i will let someone else answer that.

The "whistle" is probably the sound of an alternator really working, which is a sign that the old battery really was bad and was loading down the alt.

The slow starting may be a completely separate issue.

good luck,

thanks, you all. I think you guys are right - I do think the "lots of cranking after sitting for some time" is a separate issue. The whistle thing re. the alternator working hard makes total sense, and seems very consistent with the way things have happened.

Now, what could the fuel issue be requiring the "lots of cranking after sitting for some time?" Thanks so much, and you should know that I'm no mechanic (if it's not obvious already).
