97 jeep grand cherokee abs issue

my jeep has a code 30 on the abs (pump motor circuit bad). we have done diagnostics on the system and have come to the conclusion that the CAB is the problem. (hotwired the pump and there's nothing wrong with it and traced and tested all wires - again, nothing wrong). would there be anything else that could be the cause of the problem that we may have missed or should i get the CAB remanned and see what happens?

thanks

Before you go fixing bits... If your ABS computer is up by the front like mine

the connector is probably full of dirt and road salt/debris. This will cause all sorts of problems. Including a code 30 among others.

Best to do this with the battery disconnected, but I've done my simply by pulling the ABS fuses and relay.

Take the connector off. Take the air filter cover off and the filter out. (your going to use this as a sink) Put a plastic bag in the "sink" and some news paper.

Take the ziptie off and open the shell. Knock out all the crud that is in there.

Then with some contact cleaner, (wear gloves it's bad on the skin and even worse on the paint) spray the connector clean. Toothpick, cotton swaps, toothbrush.

Then take a small emory file to the contacts on the computer. clean also with solvent, toothpicks, swabs, etc and let dry.

Apply a liberal amount of dilectric grease to the connector (back and front, it keeps the moisture out) then reassemble the whole thing.

I put a plastic shield over my abs computer to keep future debris from getting in there. Seems where Jeep put the thing is also where the hood drains and where road junk comes in past the air box intake.

I am not sure why you are working on the ABS system, did it exhibit some sort of problem?

All I can find on a Trouble Code 30 refers to an Oxygen Sensor fault. Specifically in the Pre-Heat portion of the Oxygen Sensor. If that is correct, you need to replace that Sensor.

yes. the abs light is on and it is an abs code 30. unfortunately, no manual that i have seen has the abs codes in it...we got this code from the diagnostic computer when we plugged it into the obd port on the car.

thanks.

First off, any "real" diagnostic scanner will also tell you what the code means. If the tech is not using an OTC Genisys or a Snap-On Solus or Modis, you have wasted your time. I have seen too many folks let some "Goob" at a parts store hook up their little scanner and give them false info. Remember one thing about those guys, if they were good enough to be doing diagnostic work they would not be working for barely over minimum wage at a parts store.

My recomendation would be to find someone with a real scan tool and get an accurate diagnostic.

we used a solus diagnostic scanner (not at an autoparts store either)...the code was: abs code 30 - pump motor circuit bad. so, the diagnosis was accurate. looks like i'll just get the CAB remanned and from what i've learned that will fix the problem.

thanks

Dang, that is going to HURT! You might gamble on a salvage yard unit? Be sure you flush every single line, nook and cranny with fresh fluid no matter which way you decide to go. I believe Jeep recommends DOT-4 fluid for the ABS vehicles. That is all I use in any of my vehicles all the way back to the 60's models, it has a little higher boiling point and is less absorbant to moisture as well.

hi bruce,

not really. i can get the unit remanned for $125.00. jeep want $774.00 for a new one, so i'll go the remann, flush everything and put new fluid in and see what happens.

thanks.

That sounds like a screamin deal to me! Do you know how to test the sucker after you get it all replaced? I prefer the "pine needles and pavement" test myself.

Caution! Start out slow and keep increasing speed incrementaly until you find the limits of your "comfort zone".

Find a deserted road with the sides covered in pine needles. Run along with one side of the Jeep on the dry pavement and the other on the needles and do a HARD panic stop. If all goes well, the ABS will pulse like mad and the needle side will not lock up until you almost stop. After I do this, I reverse sides on the pavement and make the other one work.

I even do this every couple of months, just to keep the system loosened up and make sure it continues to work. My old 95 Cherokee has 4-wheel ABS and with 240,000 miles has never flickered!

Good Luck, Bruce

update.

i got the remanned CAB back last night and just finished installing it. hooked everything back up and started the car and the ABS light went off, test drove it and i have ABS again. All up cost including shipping to and from was $155.00 and the time to take it out and put it back.

Beats $774.00 for a new one from jeep.
