struts freezing in cold weather?

Hi,

I have a 1994 Camry that I know has worn struts. Normally they are a bit loud and the ride isnt great (but not unsafe yet). However, in below freezing temp, when I drive the car, it is like the rear suspension is frozen and it bangs loud and bounces you around. What gives?

Thanks, Mark

The rubber mounting bushings have gotten hard and will make a rattling or knocking sound, especially if the strut is cold. The cure is a new set of strut mount bushings. If you have the struts and bushings replaced at a Toyota dealer, you will have lifetime parts and labor warranty on those parts at any Toyota dealer in the U.S.

So is it just the bushings that are bad or the struts too?

When its not freezing, it works OK. But when cold, like now - very loud bangs in the back and a very uncomfortable bouncing ride.

thanks very much for the reply, I really appreciate it

The struts are 12 years old - replace them. Most replacement struts come with lifetime warranty (but not the labor).

Replacement struts installed by a Toyota dealer have a lifetime warranty that includes parts and labor at any Toyota dealer in the U.S. or Canada.

Guys,

Thanks again for your help. I'm getting it looked at ASAP as it has become undrivable in cold weather.

Bad strut mounts do not make the car undriveable in cold weather although they can make a terrible racket.
