already broken exhaust?

Hi, My 2.5 years old Camry V6, 53000mi developed all of the sudden a booming sound when I accelerate. I even feel a vibration on the gas pedal. I garaged the car overnight since it was new. Is it possible that the exhaust is broken? How do I find where it's leaking? Isn't body parts covered longer than the regular 36000 mi?

TIA

Sounds more like a broken engine mount - you'd hear the exhaust unless just a hanger has come loose. Basic warranty is 3 years or 36k miles which ever comes first - unless you bought an extended warranty..

The booming sound comes from the back of the car. The vibration I am talking about feels like generated by the thundering sound rather than a broken engine mount.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't exhaust systems warrantied longer than the regular warranty?

If it's as bad as it sounds (so to speak), you should be able to hear leaks if you look under the car while running (in park, of course).

While you listen, have someone else hold a rag over the end of the tail pipe (motor running). the leak will be real easy to find.

That's the weird thing, it doesn't sound different in idle, only when over

2000 rpm the booming sound. it does even with transmission in park when revving.

I try that. Thanks.

I made some time got under the car. There are 2 rods at the end of the exhaust drum that are inserted in a rubber piece. One of the rods got out of the rubber thing and got stuck in to the bracket that holds the rubber. The vibration caused by the engine revving would be transmitted as booming sound to the body.

James, Thanks for letting us know what caused the problem. Usually the only way an exhaust hanger can come out of the rubber is if something is wrong. Possibly the rubber is bad, the bracket is loose or the exhaust is moving due to weak or broken motor mounts. You may want to look further to eliminate any of these or just watch it for a while to see if it does it again. HTH, davidj92

Is it possible that sometime you ran over something small but substantial that could have knocked it out of place????
