I replaced my 1989 Toyota longbed pickup with a 2004 Tachoma. I am somewhat disappointed as I expected more improvements after 15 years. The following are the differences I have noted in the 2 trucks:
- 2004 Tachoma does not come in a 7 foot bed. Not good for camping.
- Tachoma uses 25 mpg. The 1989 used 27 mpg.
- The engine doesn't seem as powerful as the 22R in the 1989.
- The mirror adjusting mechanism feels loose but is useable. The 1989 mirrors could not be adjusted from inside the cab.
- Engine light came on after 10,000 miles which was repaired under warranty. On the 1989, it came on at 120,000 which I ate at considerable cost.
- Tachoma has no steering problems. The 1989 PU made a loud noise when turning hard left.
