1997 Jetta odometer issue

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me. A friend of mine recently purchased a 1997 Jetta. The odometer stated that the car had 256,000 kms on it at the time he purchased it. Shortly after buying it he had some electrical problems and upon taking it to the VW dealer a mechanic advised him that this model Jetta had an odometer which would reach

299,000 km and then roll back to zero. This was confirmed as the word "total" was no longer showing on the instrumentation panel. So technically this car has 556,000 kms on it! He tried to get some clarification from VW Canada and they will not comment on it, and they have further advised the dealership where he went that they cannot provide any information in writing regarding the issue of the odometer rolling back to zero.

Does anyone have any info regarding this issue that may be able to assist us in obtaining more information on this odometer in order to confirm that this is in fact true??!

HI, I heard about this issue but I never had someone who had a car with it. Hint, go to an VW dealer and have them run the OBD2 check, my Passat has an 'internal' ODO meter what can be accessed thru the OBD2 interface. some newer cars have that as a standard feature. this way I check all the time before I buy a car if it is true what theODO meter shows. this would also confirm what you wrote above.

I know that both my 1994 Golf TD and 1995 Golf TD have odometers that rolled over after 300000 kms. Both cars are original one owner cars so I believe them that did roll over, I mean who ever heard of a 1995 Golf Turbo Diesel with only 30,000kms on it??? But I don't know how to tell if it has rolled over or not or how many times it has rolled over.

Hi I have a 94 jetta diesel and it rolled over at 300000 also.
