1996 A6 passenger window regulator replacement

Hello All,

Friend of mine has a 96 A6. He brought it over today with a complaint of a slow power window. I got the door panel off and found a green clip on the forward end of the regulator that was in the process of coming apart, and as a result there is a lot of slop in the window track. It looks to me like the regulator needs to be changed out.

I don't have a rivet gun, and it looks like the regulator is riveted to a carrier frame within the door that is secured with four or five torx screws. I don't have access to a service manual, so can anyone advise as to the proper way to go about putting in a new regulator? He's gonna get the parts tomorrow and I'll told him I'd try to help.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Chris

Just out of interest, how easy was it to get the door panel off? I've read the section in the Haynes book, and it says that you insert a small screwdriver through the hole in the underside of the door handle and depress the retaining clip.

As regards your question, the Haynes manual says that on later models "The regulator is secured with pop rivets. On these models a pop rivet gun and new rivets will be required on refitting. The manufacturer states that only the special Audi/VAG rivets should be used. Do not be tempted to use any other rivets."
