94 DIC Says "Stop Engine Low Oil Pressure"

May 27, 2007 1 Replies

It is a 94 SLS 4.6L with 133,000. This DIC message just started a couple of days ago. My oil was just changed and the level is fine. The oil pressure sending unit was replaced about 2-3 years ago. Could this be bad again or is there another possible cause for this message? It only comes on at an idle after running on the highway for about 30 minutes or more.

Not too unusual for an engine with 133K miles.

It's likely that the oil PRESSURE is low at idle 'cause the poor little pump isn't turning fast enough to keep the pressure up when the oil is running through the worn bearings like a river. This is more or less to be expected in a high mileage engine and, if that is the reason, is not necessarily a sign of impending doom. Just a sign of old age.........kind of like arthritis.

A heavier oil might help, like 20W40 or 20W50. A "high mileage" variety likely would be beneficial. Now if that warning appears at any speed above a fast idle, then other things are (likely) in play and you should do what it says !!!!
