I finally got it back from the shop. After 22 hours of logged shop time, compression tested and virtually everything else checked from the fuel pump, coil and ignition. Here is what was found.
Needed a new rotor in the ignition,
new egr valve,
regapped plugs and compression was fine
and the nail in the coffin was a new computer.
Runs great again. $1200 later.
