1982 S10 backfires

About 50% of the time, when I shut off the engine on my 82 S10 2.8 L V6, it backfires. I replaced the check valves in the smog part of the engine, no change.

So, what to try next? Catalytic converter, smog pump, or that complicated and expensive electric valve next to the carb, on the passenger side?

Diesel = run on, running after shut off for a half second or so (just to clear things up)

What kind of gas mileage too? I would suspect dieseling too....

Is your timing set right? Wheres it backfire from the exhaust or the carb ? Steve C

No dieseling, idles fine, timing is good. These backfires occur out the exhaust pipe, not the carb.
