2005 Silverado Reviews - Drum Roll Please!

From EDMUNDS:

"Cons: Cheap interior materials, questionable build quality."

"Chevy takes a step backward this year with the return of rear drum brakes, as opposed to last year's four-wheel disc setup."

From AUTOSITE:

"Chevy eschews rear disc brakes for drums, an obvious downgrade of equipment."

"Objections to the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500:"

"Front seat comfort could be improved" "Interior materials look and feel inexpensive" "Structural rigidity not up to the standards in the class" "Drum rear brakes"

"We don't like the Chevy Silverado's interior materials or seat comfort. Plus, newer trucks from Dodge, Ford and Nissan are built on sturdier frames and exhibit better structural rigidity. Bottom line: if you're a Chevy truck fan, nothing but a Silverado will do. Our money is on the Dodge, Ford or Nissan."

Before I bought my 2004 CC 1500 Sierra I thought I was going to get either a Nissan Titan or a Ford Supercrew. That is until I actually drove all of the trucks. The Sierra was an easy choice then. Sometimes you have to actually DRIVE them, not just read a review.

He's talking about the 2005 series.

I guess the 04 and 05's are totally different trucks.

SOOOO, wht exactly is the point here? Drums, vice discs? That is not a "retrograde" Now slap drums back on the front and THAT my friend is a retrograde. Notes: Get the adjustable front seat. ALL mid line cars and trucks have cheap looking plastic material in the interior. Buy a BMW 7 series if you want hand sewn leather, ,or a Cadillac Escalade At least it is a full frame and not a unibody Maybe GM had a small design flaw with the rear discs. The best and cheapest way to fix is to go back to the drums, and only have ONE year of recalls.

Just my two pennies...

Yes, but when the bad review comes from Edmunds.com, "The Silverado is really starting to show its age, however, compared to the newer full-size offerings from Dodge, Ford and Nissan. The F-150 trumps the Silverado in ride comfort, while the Titan and Hemi-equipped Ram hold a serious edge in power. And all three trucks have the Chevy beaten when it comes to interior design and overall refinement. We strongly encourage you to try out the competition before you buy."

"Materials quality is unimpressive, and build quality, though improved over the last few years, is still below that of the competition."

And of course, my personal objection: "Chevy takes a step backward this year with the return of rear drum brakes, as opposed to last year's four-wheel disc setup."

I am definitely not saying that you shouldn't buy a GM truck. What I am saying is that anyone contemplating buying a new GM truck NOW should buy a 2004 model (with its lower prices, impressive rebates, discounts and financing deals) and skip the more expensive and=20 technologically-backward 2005 models.

Even though GM restyled its trucks in 1999, the 2005 GM trucks are starting to show their age. When will GM make its move into a totally new design? The old play book which allowed GM to keep a basic truck style for 11 to 14 years is out of date. Now, with a truck design that is only in its 7th year, the pressure is on GM to make a move.

My feeling is that GM produced the last of its good 1500-series trucks in 2004. Buying a 2005 full-size GM truck is not a good idea when GM's truck line may be so close to changing again.

There's a little more to it than that.

See my above post dated, Wednesday, October 06, 2004 6:32 PM, for more on this.

As far as I know, the differences affect only the 2005 1500-series.

There are 3 differences in standard equipment for 2005:

2004 2005 4-wheel disk brakes Front disc/rear DRUM brakes

P235/75R16 tires P245/70R17 tires Max rating 2271 lbs. Max rating 2205 lbs.

Rear axle 3.42 ratio Rear axle 3.23 ratio

The other difference is the EPA rating of the 2005 truck with the following equipment:

4-SPD automatic transmission Vortec 4800 V8 SFI gas engine 2004 2005 City 17/Highway 20 City 16/Highway 21

I don't have the EPA figures for the 4.6L or 5.3L motors.

If Ya do like it....... Buy it......pretty simple.

Ya know the author of that article could be a Ferd,Dodge and Nissan Fan.... I would have to say that the people here can decide if they like it or not...... if it's just the 1500's I'm okay I drive the 35's

Have a Great One ! Bob

Some guys complained when the 2003 Silverado was launched that they wanted drums in the back, so now they have that choice. What is all the ballyhoo about???

Well, I think it must still be working ok... It holds system pressure just fine. Even after having sit for over an hour you can still feel pressure in the radiator hose.

The damn waterpump bearing has been making noise pretty much ever since I got it, but now it's getting worse. You can grab the fan and rock the pump shaft back and forth. SOOOO it looks like time for a new water pump.

What a cheap piece of shit. The motor is not even 2 years old and the original water pump is going bad... must have been re-manufactured without replacing the bearings. Still works fine with no leaks, it's just noisy. So time for a new pump and thermostat.

I'm definately not putting any more money into this Mexican piece of shit (I believe all Target-Master engines are made in Mexico, arent they?). I'll put a junkyard engine into this thing before I do anything else to it.

BTW- what's wrong with your intake?

The typical pitting on the mating surfaces that occurs after time on the TBI engines. I I had them all filled in with JB Weld when I last did the intakes and sanded them down flush with the neighboring surfaces, but I guess I missed a few here and there.

I'm going to yank the 350 out of my El Camino and rebuild it for my truck and will be using Vortec heads so I'll need a new intake anyways to mate up with the newer heads.
