It'll definitely need a rejet and complete rebuilt if it's the original carb. If I were you, after spending what sounds like a good bit of time and $$$ on this thing, would be to lose the q-jet and get yourself a nice Edelbrock 700 or 750 CFM on that bad boy.

Doc, My youngest boy and myself just dropped a SBC 400 inch heated up hotrod engine and rebuilt THM350 with a shift kit into his '79 El Camino. My boy did the entire rebuild himself on the machined block. I put the exh. headers on it yesterday. I'll never forget the look on his face when we lit it off after working 14 hrs. straight at 3:00 A.M. Wed. morning. (The neighbors are still pissed, but they'll get over it.) Wouldn't take a thousand dollars for the moment. Hotrods are_such_a good hobby for young men. Anyhow, it's got an Edelbrock performer intake, a mild Comp cam, and tube headers with true duals and two cat. converters. Has the original Rochester off the 305. He was asking me if I thought it will need rejetting, and I told him I imagined it would. You're more familiar with these setups than me, I imagine. What do you think?
Thanks, Garrett Fulton

That's just what I'd like to do, but the El Camino fund is completely depleted for the forseeable future. And it was an expensive refit. However, my boy sent the throttle valve body on the Rochester out to Ca. to have the throttle shaft rebushed and replaced and has done a good job of rebuilding the rest of the carburetor. We'll just rejet it and see how it turns out, I reckon. Thanks for the input.
