ATTN Engine rebuilders

I'm tearing down a new to me block w/117k miles on it, and there is significant cross hatching visible and no ridge at the tops of the cylinders. (It does appear that one has been removed though) Am I correct in reading this as a ring job done in the not too distant past? I can't find any numbers as to how long the cross hatch pattern from honing lasts, any info would be greatly appreciated. I would suspect that any marks from the factory would be long gone at this point, correct?

You're correct - this block has been re-ringed in the not-too-distant past. As for how long ago, that's difficult to find out. Cross-hatching can wear out quickly if the engine is allowed to run under not-ideal conditions (ie - heat, lubrication, etc), but can seem to last for quite a while if it's taken care of.

What condition are the bearings in? If they're good, and the valve seats etc look good, I'd throw it back together (with customary new timing chain/oil pump just for the hell of it) with a new set of good gaskets, and be done with it! :-)

Not necessarily so. A couple years ago, I had the head off of a 2.0L Dodge Neon. It looked as you describe at 120k miles. My wife had owned the car since 54k miles, so we know that there had been no recent repairs prior.

Saw the same thing in my son's '92 Cutlass with 160,000 m. on it when we pulled the rear head to fix an oil pump drive o-ring leak. Plenty of cross hatching still on even the thrust side of the bores and very little ridge at the top. Car has had the oil and filter changed religiously however. 3.4 L DOHC V6 and good compression in all 6. He's taking it back to college with him this year and was relieved to see the condition of the engine.

Thanks for the answers everyone, guess I'll be on the safe side & do a hone/re-ring. Anyone know a decent place online to get GM v6 rings? Can't find a decent price locally.
