coolant capacity

I've just changed the water pump on my '94 S10 4.3L Z 2WD. After flushing I filled as far as I could with the engine off. I ran the truck until I got a nudge up on the temp gauge, then added more. I ran until the heater was working full blast and added more. It's "full" with about 7-8 quarts of 50/50. The stats read 12 quart capacity. I'm writing this while it cools (it's 40F outside) and I'll check and add some more- but what's going on with my missing capacity?

Coolant inside the motor?

Well unless you pulled the block drains and drained the heater core and radiator completely you still have water/coolant in the engine after the flush. If you flushed with only water you will need to use a hydrometer to see what your current protection level is. You will probably need to add some straight coolant to end up with a complete 50/50 mix.
