fluid change questions.

Hello,

I'm wanting to change the fluids in my truck. I'm wanting thicker oil protection, not thin mileage oil . I have a Chilton and a 1/2 ton 2004 Silverado 4.3 5 speed .

The clutch looks straight forward. There's a bleeder and you get help and do it like brakes. I'm hoping its as easy as it sounds . It will bleed wont it. But DOT 3 looks good to me.

And the transmission. There's a NV 3500 and 4500 and a ZF S6-650 .All have different fluids. Do I have the NV 3500 I don't recognize the fluid specs. Cant I just change it to synthetic. gear lube. like 80-90 GL5. There's a synchromesh, A Syn torq , And trans synd. Fluid.

And the radiator. Can I switch back to green anti freeze. If I flush it out with the water hose while its running. Until its clean.

And I want to put 15-40 oil in the engine for the summer. I don't see an issue with that.

Thanks, Diesel.

DOT 3 is OK, bleeding them can be fun. My advice is to use a power bleeder, and make SURE that the line on the bleeder is full of fluid before opening the bleeder. Get any air in the system and it can be fun dealing with.

NO you need to use the specified lubes, they are NOT standard gear lubes.

You can if you make SURE that you get all the Dex out. But if your changing it anyway Dex works fine. The problems related to Dex are not the coolant itself but a lack of maintenance.

You might. These engines are made to run the thinner oils. They really don't like the thick stuff.

So whats the issues that require a special lube in a manual transmission. If its gas milage then the thicker lubes might be better.

You should have the NV-3500, the 4500 was used on the larger gas engines and the ZF is in the HD trucks behind the 6.6 and up.

Better tolerances in machine work, different bearing designs, and different materials. For instance the syncros are bronze instead of brass. Normal lubes contain an additive that will etch them and cause failure. People who tried using normal gear oils have found out that it is a good way to destroy the transmission.

The lubes you can use in it are GM Synchromesh Fluid - Part# 12377916 Mopar Manual Trans Lube - Part#4874464 Pennzoil Synchomesh Fluid Royal Purple Syncromesh AMSOIL Synthetic Synchromesh Fluid.

Takes 4.2 pints IF you get all the old oil out. That usually doesn't happen and you put about 4 pints back in.
