power loss 6.2L

I have an 84 GMC 6.2L in a crew cab dually that I had replaced with a new factory crate motor 10 years ago that runs fine around town, but when I head out on the Fwy and start to climb a big hill (west coast) it will start to lose power and the water in fuel light comes on and the engine temp gauge starts to climb above 230 and if you let off the power and slow down, the light will go out and the temp go right back down to normal? I just finished a 700 mile round trip and it runs great other than this problem... Anyone have any ideas????

Thanks, Louis

I don't know why the temp. is climbing, but it sure sounds like your fuel filter is plugged. Same thing happened to my '85 with the same engine, except for the temp. increase unless I didn't notice it. There's differential pressure switch in the fuel filter mount that feeds that "water in fuel" light. Make sure you purge the air out of the new filter as per the owners handbook or you'll have a terrible time getting it started.

Best thing to do is fill the new filter with ATF before you put it on. This will clean up the injectors good. Then press the pedal to the floor as you start it. Keep it to the floor till it gets all the air out and is running smoothly.
