Question about Transmission oil

Jan 03, 2005 4 Replies

Was anything other than gear oil used in manual transmissions in Chevy full size trucks?

I was told that some manual transmissions actually had ATF or other lightwheight oils in them rather then Hypoid gear oil.

My '84 Dodge had ATF in the crashbox

lots of manuals use ATF

it's a quick-and-dirty way to increase MPG by a bit

best course is to ask the dealer what to use.........get it in writing

AutoZone also has the specs

If you have an owners manual it'll have the GM part number and fluid type listed. If you don't have one do as TranSurgeon suggests ask the dealer for the proper lubrication type.

John.The manual 4spd.overdrive trans.(89mm) used Dextron ATF. Brian O.
